The Food Corporation of India has decided to clear out about 11,000 tonnes of Bajra at a rate lesser than the Minimum Support Price (MSP) at which it purchased more than three lakh tonnes of the grain in Haryana.
FCI had acquired the coarse cereal on behalf of the Centre, at Rs 812 per quintal. The restrictions from the states to supply it through public distribution system (PDS) have forced this selling of Bajra.
The FCI was planning to sell all the 3.11 lakh tonnes Bajra bought from Haryana but it received quotations for only about 1.5 lakh tonnes, and the quoted prices were very low.
Moreover, the Centre has also acquired about 7,000 tonnes of Bajra from Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra in the 2008 Kharif season as market prices were lesser than its MSP at that time.
At present, Bajra prices at the mandis are floating in the range of Rs 600-1,190 a quintal depending on the quality and variety.
As per the agriculture ministry data, Bold variety of Bajra is being sold in the range of Rs 600-850 a quintal while hybrid variety at Rs 735-1,000 a quintal, local at Rs 900-1,190 per quintal and deshi at Rs 880-1,035 per quintal.
