Pooja room is an important part of any Hindu house and Vaastu Shastra has provided many tips to decorate or position this in a home.
However, in the ancient days a `pooja` room was never inside the house (except the Brahmins). There was a separate place outside the house for the family deity called Kudumbakshethram or family temple.
According to Vaastu Shastra, pooja room is best located in the Northeast corner of the house, as this side is governed by Eeshwar. This direction promises to bring in happiness, prosperity, health, wealth, and peace of mind. This corner should never be used as bedroom, kitchen or any other room. There should not be any toilet or kitchen, below or above or adjacent to the pooja room.
The pooja room should never be located under the staircase of a house. It should be always in the ground floor and never in the basement.
Only light weighted pictures or idols of Gods should be placed inside. It can face west, east or north, but it should never face south. The face of the Gods should not be covered with anything not even flowers and garlands. They should not face each other and should be placed atleast an inch far away from the wall. Broken idols or pictures should never be placed inside.
Lamp should be placed in front of the God inside the `Thalam` (plate). It should be placed in the door and not on elevated platforms. The oil lamp should have two flames one facing east and the other facing west.
False ceilings can be used in the prayer room, as the roof of the room should be lower in comparison to the other room. White or light yellow marble work can be opted for this and hanging bells should be avoided.
The cupboards or cabinets in the room should never be more in height in comparison to the placement of idols. One shutter door, spring door or automatic door closer should not be used. It should preferably be double-leaved door with decorative `soothrapattica`. The doors and windows should be in north or the east and should not be made of tin or iron grills. It should be positioned at the center of the wall.
The idols should be decorated with fresh flowers daily. All the material used for pooja should be placed in the south east of the room. No other articles should be kept in the pooja room.
