Jharkhand has pushed back the 34th National Games to be held in the state but now two cities of the state Jamshedpur and Ranchi is set to host the fourth and fifth legs of the Indian Grand Prix athletics meet on June 7 and 10 respectively.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has included Jamshedpur and Ranchi in the list of hosts for the Indian Grand Prix Series 2009.
Earlier, Athletics Federation of India was planning to change the schedule as Jharkhand were to host the National Games from June 1 to 14. As the National Games got delayed till November, the AFI has decided to hold the last two legs of the Grand Prix series in the two cities of Jharkhand which will also host the Games.
The athletes will contend in 19 events in the two legs- 10 for men (100m, 400m, 800m, 3000m, 110m Hurdle, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, High Jump, Long Jump) and nine for women (100m, 400m, 800m, 3000m, 100m Hurdle, Discus, Triple Jump, High Jump).
This month, the previous three legs of the series were held in Kochi, Coimbatore and Chennai. The Jamshedpur and Ranchi legs of the Grand Prix series will also serve as the qualifying events for the Berlin World Championships from August 15 to 23.
Discus thrower Krishna Poonia and 400m hurdler Joseph Abraham have already qualified for Berlin World Championships from the first three legs of the Grand Prix series. The AFI has asked all national campers preparing for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games to take part in the two legs.
