The veteran cricketer Gundappa Viswanath has received Col. C.K. Nayudu Award for lifetime achievement at the BCCI Awards function for 2007-08 on Wednesday. BCCI President Shashank Manohar presented the award to this batting maestro that included trophy citation and a cheque for Rs. 15 lakh.
After receiving the award, an elated Viswanath said, "I now find myself in the list of some of the greatest who have contributed to Indian cricket and I hope to coach the youngsters at the NCA in Bangalore. When I scored a zero in the first Test innings in Kanpur, I was encouraged by a lot of cricketers."
He added, "Ekki (Solkar), who was one of them, unfortunately is not amongst us. He encouraged me saying many great cricketers have begun their career with a zero in their first innings."
Viswanath made the Test against Australia memorable by making 137 in the second innings.
Apart from Viswanath, other awardees included Virendra Sehwag (Indian cricketer for performance in international cricket), Cheteshwar Pujara (best batsman) and Sudip Tyagi (best bowler).
