The Puducherry government is planning to host the four-day `Mayyazhi Festival` from 19th February in the Union Territory`s Mahe enclave near Kannur. This step by the Puducherry government will facilitate to promote tourism and highlight the cultural tradition of the state.
The cultural extravaganza will offer a variety of programmes of renowned musicians besides host of entertainment numbers. The Chief Minister, Puducherry, V Vaithilingam and the Home and Tourism Minister, Puducherry, E Valsaraj will inaugurate the event. According to Valsaraj, "The festival is expected to boost tourist inflow and will relieve tensions arising out of recurring political clashes in the Kannur belt."
The Lieutenant Governor, Puducherry, Govind Singh Gurjar will attend the valedictory session where tributes will be paid to martyrs. Gurjar has also informed that the government is planning to host the programme every year.
As part of its tourism promotion, the government was commencing Rs 10 crore worth three-kilometres-long foot path along the Mayyzhi River with one kilometres route stretching into the Arabian Sea. The Centre had allocated Rs 5 crore for the project.
