The Nawab of Najafgarh, Virendra Sehwag has bagged the top prize, the Polly Umrigar player of the year at the annual BCCI awards ceremony in Mumbai.
It was a time to celebrate the achievements and remember the contributions of the cricketers of the country.
After receiving the award, Sehwag said, "I think it is a great honour to receive this award especially after my role model Sachin Tendulkar. I have grown up watching Sachin on TV. I worked hard to get into the Indian side. It took me eight years to bag the circketer of the year award."
It was during 2007-2008 that Sehwag made a successful comeback to the Indian squad after being overlooked for three series. From then there was no looking back for this dashing player.
Legendary Indian Batsmen Gundappa Vishwanath was bestowed with the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement award that also carried a cash prize of 15 lakhs.
Saurastra`s Cheteshwar Pujara and UP`s Sudeep Tyagi were declared the Best Domestic players.
Mithali Raj won the Woman cricketer of the year award and to round up this glittering evening, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh were given special awards for winning the Khel Ratna and bagging 300 Test wickets respectively.
