The West Bengal Government is keen on developing new destinations and tourism products in the state to attract foreign and domestic tourists to the state. According to reports, Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal, has asked for a time-bound report from the Midnapore District Administration on the potential of developing Beach Tourism on the more than 35 km-long coastal stretch, which starts from Udaipur in New Digha to Tajpur near Contai. Inaugurating the Digha Beach Festival in East Midnapore recently, the Chief Minister stressed on the need for revamping the existing tourism infrastructure in Darjeeling, in the Sunderbans, and in Digha, besides developing new destinations and products to lure foreign and domestic tourists into the state.
Lack of tourism-related infrastructure in places like Mandarmani, Tajpur, etc., which are located on the coastal stretch and have beautiful beaches, has been highlighted by local hoteliers as reasons for not making an impact on the tourism map.
