Madras High Court issues notices to 10 telecom service providers
The Madras High Court has issued notices to 10 telecom service providers for charging extra for SMSs during important days. The notices were issued while admitting a petition by a lawyer, where the petitioner had sought direction to the companies and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for not hiking the SMS tariff during important days including New Year and the festivals. Petitioner Arunachalam also sought an interim stay on undue and sudden hike on SMS charges during important festivals and special occasions like New Year's Eve.
