Guwahati: Phanjoubam Iboton Singh, the pradhan guru of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy in Imphal was among 38 stalwarts named for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for the year 2010.

Vice-President, M Hamid Ansari, gave away the awards carrying Rs one lakh, a citation and a shawl at the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards ceremony held at Kamani Auditorium in New Delhi on Friday evening. Iboton received the prestigious national award for his contribution in the field of Manipuri dance, a Manipur government spokesman said.

Born in 1951 in Durgabol village in Assam, Phanjoubam Iboton Singh was initiated in the art of Pung (Meitei drum) playing in Nata Sankartana by Meitram Lalbabu Singh and Meinam Mangol Singh. Later, he trained in the art under Soram Budha Singh and Sanasam Yaima. He subsequently trained and specialized in Manipuri Ras under various 'gurus' like K Lokeshwar Singh, G Ibopishak Sharma, R K Sanayaima Singh and L Thambalngoubi Devi. He obtained post-graduate diploma both in Ras and Pung at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal.
