Mangalore: IM Konguvel of ONGC today joined leader IM Suvrajit Saha with seven points in the 8th round at the Indian Overseas Bank 5th Mangalroe FiDE Rated Open Chess Tournament.

Saha, from Eastern Railway, played a safe draw against Stany on the top board in 28 moves from Petroff Defense.

IM Anup Deshmukh sacrificed a piece on 19th move against IM Konguvel from the white side of Hedge hog setup. Konguvel defended well and counter attacked.

However both the kings were under severe pressure, blacks attack stood better in the end to wrap up game in 44 moves. The Railway man beat IM Nitin of TN in the 7th round of 5th Mangalore International Open FIDE rated chess tournament.
