22 panchayats get government's nod for composing pits
 

Panaji: Only 22 panchayats have been granted administrative approvals to acquire land to set up composting pits to tackle the garbage menace in villages, while 71 panchayats have obtained approvals from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) for getting administrative approvals to acquire land.

Out of the 189 panchayats, 169 have identified sites to set up composting pits under the Rural Garbage Disposal Scheme, 2005. Of the 128 proposals sent to the GSPCB for site approval, 71 were approved, 43 were rejected and 14 are pending before the board, while 22 panchayats were given approvals from the directorate of panchayats.

Recently, the government had constituted a monitoring-cum-working committee under the department of science, technology and environment consisting of various government departments, panchayats and NGOs working in the field of solid waste management to support consolidate and assist in the disposal of plastic waste.
