Surat: The state government on Thursday announced sand mining lease auction in six blocks of Tapi riverbed at Amboli, Dhoran and Bhairav near Kamrej, some 25 km off Surat city.
This will help it earn revenue of about Rs 8.6 crore and also check the skyrocketing prices of sand. For the past one month, sand prices have hit the roof as sand mining has come to a stop in Surat following the completion of the lease holders' tenure.
However a brass of sand that was sold at Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,400 a couple of months ago is now priced at above Rs 3,000. A truck containing two brasses of sand was sold at Rs 6,500 against its normal rate of Rs 3,500. The state government had made changes in the rule to divide the riverbed into 16 blocks.
The government has set the upset value of Rs 8.67 crore for the entire six blocks together. Once the auction bid tenders are received by month-end, the date of auction will be announced.
