Kottayam: Information Minister Ambika Soni at a meeting held in Delhi, has agreed to set up the south zone centre of the IIMC at Kottayam. An assurance in that regard was given by the minister to MP Jose K Mani at a meeting held at Delhi yesterday.
The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is one of the premier institutes for training, teaching and research in mass communication. It was set up in 1965 on the recommendation of a team of mass communication specialists from UNESCO and the Ford foundation. Late Indira Gandhi, the then Information and Broadcasting Minister formally inaugurated the institute on August 17, 1965 in Delhi. Its first branch was inaugurated in 1993 at Dhankanal in Orissa. Kottayam centre will be the second branch of the IIMC.
The previous LDF government had sabotaged the centre by not allotting land at Kottayam. Even though former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan had given instruction for allotting land for the centre at Kottayam, it was sabotaged later.
Now the present UDF government had given green signal for allotting land for the centre at Kottayam on the basis of Jose K Manis request to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and state Information Minister K C Joseph. IIMC centre would be a milestone in the history of media of Kottayam, Jose K Mani said in a statement here yesterday.
