Panaji: The environment department on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with ACC limited, Wadi for the disposal of plastic, thermocol, tyres and other such waste items from the state.
Environment minister Aleixo Sequeira said the state has to collect the plastic and other waste and deliver it to ACC limited at their facility in Wadi in Karnataka. Other then the transportation cost, there is no financial burden either on the state or on ACC. The MOU is initially for a period of three years. It comes into force with immediate effect.
Under the scheme, the panchayat has to build a collection centre for all the plastics from the village, right from drinking water bottles to potato chips packets. Once the panchayat has collected 60 to 100 bags of plastic at the centre, it must inform a government-appointed contractor to collect the plastic. The contractor is paid by the government, not the panchayat. The contractor then transports the plastics out of the state.
