Jamshedpur: Tata Motors Hospital is planning to set up a breast milk bank that would serve the infants, particularly, motherless children in the state.
"This project has less to do with the hospital and more to do with the infant mortality prevention programme of the government," said Dr Rajiv Sharma, a pediatrician and the brain behind the milk bank project.
However the hospital has borrowed this concept from Norway, where according to Dr Sharma many new born babies are dependent on the milk bank. "We borrowed this idea from Norway where milk banks successfully provides feed to the new born and even SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, has successfully introduced this concept," said Dr Sharma.
According to the doctor, at least 20% of the infant mortality rate will be checked in Jharkhand if the milk bank concept is introduced effectively. "In the years to come, our state will see a fall of about 20% in the infant mortality rate if the breast milk bank starts functioning," added Dr Sharma.
