Sanjay Gupta in the new MEGA chief

Gandhinagar: Gujarat government appointed Sanjay Gupta, a 1985 batch IAS officer who resigned from the service in 2002 to join the Adani Group as CEO, as chairman of the special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed to undertake the Rs 12,000 crore metro projects - Metro Express between Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA).

While a decision was taken to appoint Gupta as MEGA chairman in February, it took more than a month to issue the order. "Negotiations were on between Gupta and state officials on terms and conditions of appointment during the past five weeks, which caused the delay," a senior official said.

One of the few bureaucrats who have been able to make a mark for themselves as successful entrepreneurs on quitting service, Gupta, 48, currently owns Neesa group of companies, which are into tourism and entertainment.
