Faced with a formidable enemy snapping at its sovereignty at sea, India proposes to bring a legislation that would empower its forces to take the menace of piracy head-on and deal with pirates gnawing at its territorial supremacy effectively.
With Somali, pirates get audacious and inching towards the Indian coast, the matter has assumed greater proportions, not just security of the ships passing the area but national security as well due to their alleged connections with terror organisations, according to official sources.
However, the government is conscious of the looming threat and hence wants to tackle the issue both physically as well as legally, sources informed adding that as part of this move several proposals are on the table to handle the issue in a more technically apt way.
Explaining the entirely new paradigm where pirates were moving base to the Indian Ocean, close to the Indian coastline, following several reverses at the hands of the India navy, along with that of other countries, sources said Somalian pirates were now taking refuge in a rather safer 'haven' where they would be less in direct confrontation with the navies.
The seriousness of the concern dawned following the hostage crisis of 53 Indian sailors being held captive by the Somalian pirates. Hence the fresh move for a law to deal with the new complex scenario involving foreign nationals, as there was no international law that could provide guidelines on the issue.
