Amravati: Social forestry department has appealed to Amravati Municipal Corporation (AMC) to take up a tree plantation drive vigorously and instructed it to take its help in this work.
There are only five lakh trees in Amravati city, while considering the area of the city, it should ideally have over 14.5 lakh trees. Only this number of trees will help the city maintain an ecological balance.
MP Hansraj Ahir sent a letter to the then chief minister Ashok Chavan in this regard. He had informed the chief minister of the results of the tree census in Amravati and highlighted the deficit of trees. Ahir had described the figures as alarming and asked the government to look into matter.
Taking cognisance of Ahir's letter, Chavan had sent the letter to the principal chief conservator of forests, who in turn forwarded it to the social forestry department (SFD). The SFD on December 18 sent a letter to AMC, asking it to take up vigorous trees plantation drives. The SFD joint director has also appealed AMC to take advantage of saplings that the department provides for plantation at a very nominal cost. He also suggested that AMC should take the help of NGOs working in the field of forest and environment conservation.
