Avtar Singh Makkar re-elected as SGPC President

Amritsar: Avtar Singh Makkar has been re-elected the President of Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC), which manages key Sikh shrines, for a sixth successive term.

His election through secret ballots came during the Annual General House Meeting of the Sikh religious body held on November 16.

Makkar, a close aide of Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, was elected SGPC president for the first time in 2005. He is the second incumbent to occupy the top seat of Sikh religious body after late Gurcharan Singh Tohra who had remained its head for 27 terms.

He secured 133 votes out of 156 polled votes while his challenger Harbhjan Singh polled 23.

Earlier the name of Makkar was proposed by SGPC General Secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur and SGPC member of SAD group Rajinder Singh Mehta seconded his name.
