Private telecom operators Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar will launch Apple`s iPhone, the touch screen handset on August 22.
This new entrant will give competitors like Nokia, Samsung and others a run for their money. This handset is already in high demand in other western countries. Millions of Airtel and Vodafone Essar subscribers would be able to purchase the iPhone at their retail counters from August 22.
Currently, Bharti Airtel has nearly 69 million subscribers and Vodafone Essar has 49 million.
Sanjay Kapoor, President Bharti Airtel mobile services said in a statement, "iPhone has been an iconic technological revelation of this year and Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector."
As per the Vodafone Essar executives, they are also launching their iPhone on the same date.
The new gadget is embedded with all 3G (third generation mobile telephony) features and is twice as fast as the existing mobile phones. The phone also has in-built GPS system, which facilitates as navigation and positioning tool.
The price of the iPhone is not declared at this point. As per the Analysts, Indian operators may not finance the handset, which is a case in US as operators there make up for that with their call charges.
They charge rates like 25 cents a minute. In India, the charge is 1.5 to 2 cents a minute. Taking this into consideration, the iPhone may cost somewhere around Rs 20,000.
