Chennai : School students today are not encouraged to become thinkers, partly due to the education system and partly due to the pressures imposed by parents, higher education minister K Ponmudy said on Aug 24.
Distributing the Tamil Nadu Scientist Awards here, he said the implementation of activity-based learning was a first step towards correcting this. "More than teachers and universities, parents tend to contribute towards decreasing students' interest in new things by insisting they stick to a particular routine," he said.
Ten scientists were recognised for their contributions in different fields for 2007, 2008 and 2009. The awards instituted for Teachers' Day' were also distributed. Government College of Technology, Coimbatore, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Salem and Madras Christian College, Tambaram, which bagged the Best College' awards, received prize money of Rs 1 lakh with a citation. Six educationists were awarded for their contribution while 20 teachers from government colleges were recognised by the State Council for Higher Education. The Tamil Nadu State Council for Technical Education also awarded 10 researchers for their services. As many as 10,256 school students were awarded Inspire scholarships with a cash prize of Rs 5000.
