Music director Vidyasagar is melody maker

It's not often that you see a gifted music director like Vidyasagar this excited. And so, when you do, you know that he has something really extraordinary to offer.

Begins the king of melody, who is just back from a recent trip to London where he was busy composing the music of Ilaignan, "In my long career as a music composer, I find that the experience of composing music for this film has been a very fulfilling one for me in many ways. In today's scenario, I have tried something that is radically different. It is nothing but music - from the time you start playing the songs to the time you switch if off. There is no technical wizardry and no technical gizmos have been used. All you will get to hear in this album is music, music and more music."

But that isn't the only reason why Vidyasagar considers this film special. "It is also the first time that I have recorded in London using a 90-piece orchestra. Most of those who played for the compositions play for different philharmonic groups including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra," he discloses.

However, the musician clarifies that he composed the songs in London only because of the fact that certain musical instruments and their players were available there. "I had to record these songs there because there were subtle portions that required the usage of certain instruments available there. For instance, horns in the brass section; I think it's quite difficult to find them in India. It is not that we have them here and I preferred those in the UK."

Nevertheless, it is evident that the experience has been a memorable one for the musician. He says, "It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for me. Many of those who played out these compositions were impressed by the tunes and came to appreciate me after the session."

That is understandable, considering the fact that the talented music director's compositions have come in for praise from different parts of the world, including Russia, where he's won the River Olga Festival award. However, persuade the national-award winner, who has also won seven state awards and four Filmfare awards, to pick one memorable incident from the whole experience of composing for Ilaignan, which is directed by Suresh Krissna, and he discloses, "While the major part was recorded in London, we also recorded some portions in Budapest (in Hungary) and Chennai. This incident happened in Budapest. We needed the Taiko drums (the big Japanese drums) to be played and as a recording session got extended, four musicians who were to play in the session left. So, I played the Taiko drums along with another drummer!"

Finally, ask him what kind of music can one expect from this film and Vidyasagar replies, "Ilaignan, the script of which has been penned by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, is a period film that is set in the romantic era of classical music. You will find Western classical music mixed with our Indian melodies. I want to talk less and let the music speak for itself."

He concludes on a confident note, "I can assure you that as a listener of good music and as a producer of good music, that this will be a treat to all lovers of good music."
