Yavatmal : Sitting Lok Sabha member from Yavatmal-Washim Parliament Constituency Bhavana Gawali on Aug 29 threatened to launch an agitation if the state government goes ahead with its proposal to close down the only milk chilling plant in Pusad.
According to Bhavana Gawali, a milk chilling plant with a capacity of 50,000 litres was set up at Pusad-based MIDC in 1985 at the cost of crores of rupees.
During 1985 to 1995, 15,000-20,000 litres of milk from over 100 villages of Pusad, Umarkhed, Mahagaon and Digras talukas were collected at the centre and after chilling, were sent to Akola for distribution.
However, unabated drought in the region in the last three years resulted in shortage of fodder. Labour charges also increased tremendously. Adding to their woes, the government failed to increase the cost of milk to balance the expenditure which forced the farmers to stop their dairies.
