New Delhi : In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, the minister of state for tourism Sultan Ahmed, said that the ministry of tourism extended central financial assistance to the state governments/union territory administrations for the setting up of the Institutes of Hotel Management (IHM).
At present, there were 33 functional central and state IHM affiliated to the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology, he informed the House.
"The Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTA) witnessed a growth of 13.5% in the year 2006, 14.3% in the year 2007 and 4% in the year 2008, over the preceding years. Even though there was a dip in FTA of 3.3% in the year 2009, the first 7 months of the year 2010 had again registered a growth of 9.8%. Based on the tourism satellite account for the year 2002-03, the number of jobs projected (both direct and indirect) in tourism sector for the years 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 had been estimated as 45.1 million, 47.4 million and 49.8 million respectively," he said.
In India tourism industry was largely essentially driven by the private sector. "However, the ministry of tourism plays an important role of creating infrastructure and imparting training for employable skills in aspiring service providers and certifying the skills of the existing ones," he added.
