Measures for dealing with Dengue in Delhi

Local health authorities are undertaking extensive mosquito control measures which include source reduction, anti-larval measures using temephos etc. and fogging. Sufficient stock of these items is available. Railways have started fogging along the railways track.

The joint close monitoring by MCD, NVBDCP, NCDC and NIMR in and around CWG stadia has shown drastic reduction in mosquito breeding. With the intensive efforts for mosquito control, the cases have started showing downward trend in central and south zones of Delhi.

Fortunately, the present dengue virus infection is benign, which is evident from low mortality in comparison to earlier years. Fatality rate due to early detection of cases and proper management is extremely low. Only 3 deaths out of 863 reported cases till today.

Hospitals both in govt. and private sector are prepared for detection and treatment of cases. A review of this preparedness was done on 28 August 2010 at AIIMS, New Delhi. The system is fully prepared to meet any future need of platelets, if required for management of cases.

Since the mosquito causing dengue virus breeds in and around the houses in clean water, involvement of community, Resident Welfare Associations, schools, NGOs and municipal counsellors is very essential in supplementing the government efforts in controlling dengue in the city. There is no need to panic but get involved in the control measures which are very simple and can be easily done by each household.
