Free coaching for bright minds in NDMC schools

New Delhi : Now, NDMC school students will be able to get coaching for competitive exams - engineering and medical - from the best minds in the industry for free. The civic body has decided to start a new comprehensive coaching scheme for students of Class XI and XII. In the scheme, top coaching institutes will be roped in to teach 70 meritorious students, who will be selected through a qualifying examination. Normally, the fee charged by coaching institutes is above Rs 50,000 a year.

''Classes will start from next month. The technical details of the scheme have been finalized,'' said Anand Tiwari, NDMC spokesperson. He said a meeting of top coaching institutes interested in providing training to students and NDMC officials was held last week to discuss the issue. The final bidding for selection of coaching institutes will take place on Sep 3, he added. The bidders include FIIT JEE, Sahil Study Circle and Aacharya.

NDMC officials said the objective of the scheme, named Lakshya, is to improve the academic performance of talented students by providing special coaching for professional courses like engineering and medicine. ''There are many poor and underprivileged children studying at the 12 senior secondary schools run by NDMC who cannot afford the exorbitant fees charged by good coaching institutes,'' said an official.

For Class XI students, there will be a two-year programme and for those studying in Class XII, the coaching classes will be a one-year programme. Thirty-five students each will be selected for these programmes through a qualifying exam. ''There is not much time left for Class XII students to prepare for competitive exams. So, it has been decided that they will be given five classes in a week as against three classes that will be given to class XI students. The location for holding these coaching classes is yet to be decided but there will not be any transport facility for students,'' said an official, who was present at the meeting.
