Supreme Court Orders Government to distribute free foodgrains to the hungry

The Supreme Court has asked the government to distribute grain that's getting damaged among the poor free of cost. The recent pictures of rotting food grains shocked the nation and attracted the attention of the Supreme Court.

A worried court said, "In a country where admittedly people are starving it is crime to waste even a single grain." Two weeks later, in what could be a defining observation, the court asked the government why should the surplus grain not be given away free to the hungry in the country.

The Supreme Court has even given a series of directions to tackle the problem of growing surplus and growing hunger. The court has suggested that the government strengthen the public distribution system in areas that are prone to droughts and floods, computerise the entire PDS, fair price shops must remain open 30 days of the month, Government must build at least one large FCI godown in every state and one small godown in every division and district.

The court has now given six weeks to all the state governments to respond to these suggestions. However, the ministry told the apex court all entitlements to all card holders would continue until the new food security law is ready.
