Pune : To commemorate the golden jubilee year of the state of Maharashtra, a state-level meet of Marathi theatre professionals will be held in the city from October 1 to 3. The Suvarnamai Marathi Natya Sammelan, organised by city-based Srujan Foundation, will see more than 1,000 representatives from all over the state. In the offing are interactive sessions and programmes on different aspects of Marathi theatre.
"For a long time, we had been planning such a meet to highlight the state's rich history of theatre. Now, 2010 being the 50th year of our state, it's only too apt to organise this natya sammelan," said veteran actor Prabhakar Panshikar, at a press conference. He also inaugurated the office of the Suvarnamai Marathi Natya Sammelan, off Tilak Road.
The Marathi theatre meet will comprise aspects related to commercial, amateur and experimental Marathi theatre, said Vishwas Mehedale of the Srujan Foundation. It will also include serious discussion on topics likes copyright issues related to plays, the technical, logistical and artistic glitches that playwrights and those involved in theatre face, the development of the Marathi theatre in the last 50 years and the course of action for the future.
Mehendale travelled to six different districts of Maharashtra and met various theatre groups to spread the word on the meet. "We've got an encouraging response so far. During the meet in Pune, we want include performances by theatre groups hailing from the rural heartlands, in order to give them urban exposure," said Mehendale.
