Saket court is all set to be inaugurated in August

New Delhi : After missing three deadlines for making the Saket court complex sixth district court in the capital operational, authorities are finally going to inaugurate the building in August.

With construction work almost completed in what will be Asia's biggest court complex, Delhi high court committee on Monday went for the final inspection of the building after which the date of inauguration of the sixth district court complex will be finalised.

After the inspection, the HC committee comprising of Justice B D Ahmed, Justice Aruna Suresh, Justice Ajit Bharioke and Justice Veena Birbal have asked the executive engineer to have a meeting with them where they will decide on taking the possession of the building, sources said.

The deadline for completion of Saket court complex, which was supposed to be ready by December 2009, was later extended to February 2010 and then to June-end. Sources say that construction of the building is almost complete with only finishing work left.

According to reports, work in the main building has been completed and electricity supply is also available. A temporary lock-up has been made for undertrials till a permanent judicial lock-up is constructed. Construction of advocate chambers and houses has been completed. "HC is planning to inaugurate the building within August 15-20. The date is not decided yet but the courts will definitely start functioning in the new complex by month end,'' said the reports.

Promoted as a high-tech court complex, the Saket court has been under construction since 2007. The project consists of 80 court rooms and 92 chambers for judges with all infrastructural facilities. In addition, separate towers with 666 lawyers' chambers and 128 residential houses for judges are in the offing. After becoming operational, the seven-storey court complex will take on a major part of the burden of the Patiala House district court complex in central Delhi, which lacks facilities for both litigants and lawyers.

The Patiala House court complex houses a total of 5,000 lawyers and over 40 courts. At present, Patiala House court has south district, southeast district and New Delhi district under its jurisdiction. According to the plans, only New Delhi district will stay with the Patiala House complex and the other two districts will be transferred to the Saket court.
