Saket court complex to open from Aug 28 in New Delhi

New Delhi : Touted as Asia's biggest court complex, the capital's sixth district court coming up in Saket will become operational from August 28.

The new building will have 26 civil and criminal courts that will cater to the south and southeast districts, an official communique said. The seven-storey building has 80 courtrooms and 92 chambers for judges with all infrastructural facilities. It also has 666 lawyers' chambers and 128 residential houses for judges.

A temporary lock-up has also been made for the undertrials till the time a permanent judicial lock-up is constructed. According to initial plans, the Saket court complex was supposed to be ready in December 2009. The deadline was later extended to February this year and then to June-end. Finally, on August 2, a team of high court judges went for a final inspection of the building after which they decided to inaugurate the complex.

With its functioning, the litigants of south Delhi will not have to travel to the Patiala House Court complex here to attend their cases. Earlier, 42 civil and criminal trial courts of New Delhi, south and south-east districts were located in the Patiala House courts. The Patiala House court complex houses a total of 5,000 lawyers and over 40 courts. At present, Patiala House Court has south district, south-east district and New Delhi district under its jurisdiction. As per the plans, only New Delhi district will stay in the Patiala House complex and other two districts will be transferred to Saket court. However, the public prosecutors of the courts, which would be shifted to the new complex, are unhappy over the alleged lack of proper office space available for them.
