 Kolkata : Her couplets are now the political slogans across Bengal. Mamata Banerjee continues to surprise, this time as a Durga Puja designer.
She has not only devised the theme for this year's pandal by Bakulbagan Sarbojonin in Bhowanipore in South Kolkata, she is even sketching the idol, designing the interiors, suggesting the lighting arrangements and will even be fine-tuning the sound system.
The Trinamool Congress chief is said to have worked on the idol's sketch during the time she was confined at home after the August 9 Lalgarh meeting. She could not finish the artwork because of her injuries but has promised to complete it and hand it to the organizers soon after she returns from Delhi. It will be left to artist Arun Pal to give shape to the drawing.
"Formless Durga" is Mamata's theme for Bakulbagan in 2010. She has taken inspiration from mythology and is believed to have leant heavily on "tantra" and spiritual teachings, which will be depicted through paintings and figures on the walls inside the pandal. The sound and lighting arrangements will complement the idea.
"It is a unique theme that has never been thought of previously. It would be truly novel if the artists manage to implement her ideas. You will get a divine atmosphere inside the pandal," said a source. Artist Gourmohan Pahari will be designing the interiors under Mamata's guidance.
