Chennai : Students of the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University will get an opportunity to undertake an active internship at the Cyber Appellate Tribunal (CAT) in New Delhi from the coming academic year.
CAT chairperson Justice Rajesh Tandon, who inaugurated a computer lab for postgraduate students and research scholars at the university on Aug 6, said students could undertake a month long internship at the appellate authority. "They can actively participate in the proceedings of the CAT and witness how an appellate authority functions. This will give them an insight into cyber-related crime and law," justice Tandon said.
The offer to grant internship for students of the university came on a request from the university's vice chancellor professor V Vijayakumar. Justice Tandon said he had on Aug 5 conducted a review meeting on the progress of cyber fraud cases in Tamil Nadu and interacted with cyber crime wing officials and the state information technology secretary, who is also the adjudicating officer for cyber crime cases under the Information Technology Act. "We found that more bank frauds were pending before the cyber crime wing here," he added and called upon the IT secretary to set up a court-like environment to deal with case as by virtue of being the adjudicating officer, he enjoyed the powers of a civil court judge.
Earlier, vice chancellor Vijayakumar called for bridging the gap between advancement in technology and the time taken to draft legislations to deal with technological crimes. "It took six years from propose 54 amendments to the IT Act," he pointed out.
