Ahmedabad : As many as 40 women from the Lioness Club of Karnavati left for Wagah on Wednesday to celebrate Rakshabandhan with jawans guarding the India-Pakistan border. They will be tying rakhis to them on August 13 and 14. The festival is on August 24. Prepared to give the border a festive look, the ladies are carrying tilak to perform aarti, thousands of rakhis, gifts and sweets.
It is a dream come true for Sarla Malani, who has been sending thousands of rakhis to jawans or borders for the past three years. "The BSF jawans undergo a hard and tedious life during their postings in hostile terrain. To make them feel at home, I started sending rakhis to border areas. I am on cloud nine as this time I am going there in person."
"Going to Wagah was Malani's idea. I consider myself privileged to get this opportunity," said Suman Todi, 57, resident of Ambawadi.
"These are not ordinary rakhis. These are freedom rakhis and meant to celebrate the joy of independence. It is just an effort to show that we care for the jawans and our best wishes are with them," said Sheila Mehta, 52, president of Lioness Club.
