Hyderabad : The Centre finally gave its nod to a long-pending state government's proposal to develop road network in Naxal-infested areas in seven districts at a cost of Rs 1600 crore, Roads and Buildings minister G Aruna Kumari said on Aug 10.
Speaking at a press conference, the minister said the Union home ministry has given green signal to develop road connectivity in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, East Godavari, Visakhapatnam Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts under special development programme in Naxal-hit areas. The Union home ministry has informed them that the proposal has been forwarded to Planning Commission to get final approval for budget allocation.
Stating that the road development works were being taken up in the border districts which will connect Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa where Naxal menace was growing, the minister said Centre has already released Rs 1000 crore to develop roads in Khammam district under phase one programme.
Under 2010-11 annual plan, government had also sent a proposal to Union ministry of surface transport to allocate Rs 700 crore to develop national highways in a stretch of 450 km. The state government also proposes to develop roads on the stretch of 1,050 km under central road fund (CRF) scheme in 2010, the minister said.
To a query, state principal secretary to R&B and transport department Laxmi Parthasarathi said the department was trying to seek more funds to develop radial roads under GHMC limits. Some roads have already been handed over to HMDA and GHMC in the city as the R&B department found that they cannot maintain them in the city. She claimed that the roads being maintained by R&B department were not damaged during the recent rains in the city. It was only the roads maintained by GHMC which have suffered damage, she added.
