Andhra Pradesh judge clears 111 cases in a day

Mangalagiri (Andhra Pradesh) : If we had a few more of these judges, India's backlog of nearly 3 crore cases at all levels could be cleared in a jiffy. A junior judge in Mangalagiri town sat through a marathon session and cleared 111 cases on Thursday, likely creating a world record of sorts.

Guntur district's junior civil judge JVV Satyanarayana Murthy, who had earlier received all-round applause from the legal fraternity for delivering the judgment in Telugu, exercised his option of imposing fines in most cases; no one was jailed.

The judge made the exchequer richer by Rs 98,000, by imposing fines in 78 cases. The accused were acquitted in the remaining 33 cases. The 111 cases included thefts, street brawls and road accidents. In one case, the judge ordered remittance of Rs 4 lakh seized during the general elections to the government exchequer.

Reports said the judge was lenient with those who admitted their crime, thereby also saving time for the court and litigants. The previous record in the country was of 80 cases, bar association members claimed.

Murthy took charge as additional junior civil judge in May 2010 and has disposed of nearly 500 cases so far. "Clearing nearly 500 cases in a span of three-and-a-half months in itself is a record," said advocate Aregakuti Sanjeeva Reddy.

Reports said nearly 1,850 cases were pending when Murthy took charge that has since come down to 1,350 cases. Earlier, at Pulivendula town a few years ago, he had disposed of some 808 cases.
