Mithun to dance once again in new-age flick

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty will put on his dancing shoes once again after his 1982 smash hit 'Disco Dancer' in upcoming crossover movie 'Spaghetti 24X7'.

This time, however, the actor, who strides the art house and commercial movies with equal elan, will get his son Mimoh for company in the film which will see the father-son duo appear for the first time on big screen. Mithun had shown his dancing prowess in another Hindi film 'Dance Dance', but it was not as successful as 'Disco Dancer' which established him firmly in the world of commercial Hindi cinema.

Mithun said he just can't wait to see the reaction among today's new crop of dancers to his dancing skill. "'Spaghetti 24X7' will have flashes of me dancing to the tunes set by one of a new generation of musicians and I am keen to see the reaction among today's dancers," the undisputable disco king of the '80s said.

The film has his second son Rimoh as the assistant director of the project. 'Sphagetti 24X7' is directed by Gaurav Pandey whose Bengali film 'Shukno Lanka' (Dry Chilly), also starring Mithun, has just been released to critical acclaim. The actor, who was once dubbed as 'poor man's Amitabh Bachchan', is willing to see someone match his steps and pelvic thrusts and gave hints that his son would fit the bill.

"My son has proved to be a skilled dancer and I am happy with his performance both as a dancer and as an actor," Mithun said about Mimoh's role as a bartender in 'Spaghetti 24X7'.

Asked about him and Mimoh, whose debut film was 'Jimmy', acting together in any future film, the 60-year-old 'young man' said, "Yes, I am very much open to the idea."

"If there is a good script, why not? But the roles should click," he said, adding he was also open to the idea of acting in a film directed by his younger son Rimoh in future.

After acting in a 'Phir Kabhi' with him, Rimoh is now focusing on direction, the actor said. "For me it is the script and the man behind it that counts. I was really fascinated by Gaurav's script, which I consider as my younger brother and agreed to do both his films 'Shukno Lanka' and 'Spaghetti 24/7'," Mithun said.

Talking about the spate of new cross-over films in Bengali directed by a host of talented directors, Mithun said it was heartening that such films having a ready audience in and outside Bengal were being marketed countrywide and abroad alongwith local release.

"We have to market Bengali cinema outside the state. Our films are now being released on a national scale and marketed internationally as well," Mithun said, expressing hope that the situation would be the same for other language films as well. The three-time national award winner said he was ready to act in any film by Mrinal Sen who had launched him in his critically-acclaimed 'Mrigaya' where his stupendous performance fetched him the best actor award.

He is also keen to act with director Buddhadeb Dasgupta again. "For Buddhadebd, I had acted in Tahader Katha' and 'Kalpurush' and am keen to be part of his any future project," he added. He went on to bag two more national awards for 'Tahadar Katha' and 'Swami Vivekananda'. Mithun said he was against classifying films into arthouse and commercial.

"For me, a film is a film. It has to entertain the audience which may fall in different types. An 'MLA Fatakesto', a superhit Bengali movie, or a 'Titli' may cater to different audiences, but both are films having entertained their respective targets," said the actor.
