Dharwad : Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) national president Maj Gen L K Gupta said that a comprehensive list of protected as well as unprotected monuments in the country would be prepared to save the cultural heritage of the nation.
Speaking after inaugurating a two-day photography exhibition on Adil Shahi monuments organised by the Dharwad chapter of INTACH at the Government Art Gallery here, he said several rare monuments were on the verge of extinction due to a lack of information about them. "There is an urgent need to gather information about these heritage sites. INTACH is working with the Central government to protect the nation's cultural assets," he added.
He said, in the next stage, the INTACH would take up projects to preserve vanishing monuments and other historical structures. Besides, pressure would be exerted on the ministries concerned to develop archaeological sites. Underscoring the need for rescuing natural heritage sites like hills and traditional aspects that represented a particular geographical area, Gupta said INTACH would give equal importance to both natural as well as man-made structures as they were a symbol of our nation's grand heritage.
Speaking on the occasion, INTACH's state convener P C Naik said Karnataka is a hub of art, literature and culture. "Bahamani and Chalukya dynasties had played a crucial role in the cultural development of the state. There is a need to protect the legacy left behind by those dynasties in Bidar, Gulbarga, Bijapur, Badami and Pattadkal," Naik asserted.
Historian and photographer Dr H G Daddi appealed to INTACH to concentrate on protecting monuments of Adil Shahi rulers in Bijapur as they were facing the threat of encroachment. Journalist Rajeshwari Tandon, retired IAS officer Anil Gokak, journalist Raju S Vijapur, Dharwad INTACH president Jagadale, Brigadier (retd) S G Bhagavat and N P Bhat were among the others present at the function.
