Raipur : Farmers in Chhattisgarh who have yet to pay their power dues will be provided free electricity under a government scheme, official reports said on July 23.
This was decided at a review meeting of Energy Department and power company officials here, they said. The meet was presided over by Chief Minister Raman Singh.
Nearly 76,348 farmers, whose power dues are pending, will be covered under the scheme, Krishak Jeevan Jyoti Yojana.
Under this, they will get 6,000 units of electricity for 5 horse power irrigation pumps free of cost every year, the sources said. Power situation in the state has improved, but given the less-than-average monsoon rainfall, farmers need water for their crops urgently. Hence, the defaulter-farmers are being covered under the scheme to provide them relief from deficient rainfall; Singh was quoted as saying by the officials.
