Surat : Mohan Meghani, noted historian and former head of the department at MTB Arts College, has been honoured by Narmad Sahitya Sabha with a Narmad Chandrak for his book '19th Century Surat'.
He was awarded the medal by veteran journalist and writer Bhagvatikumar Sharma, president, Gujarat Sahitya Parishad, at a function held here on Jul 18.
Meghani has written several books about the history of the city since 16th century. The 19th Century Surat', his latest work, is about an era when foreign rulers like British, Dutch and Portuguese played an important role in the city's international trade. It also describes about the impact of the direct rule of the British officials in the city.
The book has information on the legendary poet Narmad. It also describes Surat city's municipal corporation that began working during the century. Meghani is the only historian in the city to have thoroughly studied the history of the city and profusely written about it.
