Thane: The 21st edition of the Thane Mayor Varsha Marathon (TMVM), which will be held here on July 18, will celebrate Maharashtra's 50 years, showcasing the sporting spirit of its people.
The third oldest marathon in the country will offer enhanced prize money of Rs 5, 00,000 to this years winners. At a press conference here on Jun 10, Thane Mayor Ashok Vaiti said ''The Thane Mayor Varsha Marathon is a perfect training ground for many athletes, not only from the Thane district, but across the state as hundreds of regular and new participants join the run every year. With the prize money hike this year, I'm sure the number would definitely increase.'' Commenting on the event, Satish Pradhan, President, Thane Marathon Trust, said ''I have witnessed top professional runners and sport enthusiasts participating in TMVM every year.
Keeping in mind the emotions of these runners, this year we are taking the Marathon to next level. I am extremely happy to announce that we will have a media centre that will provide all updated information on the marathon on daily basis. We are also planning a Marathon Week before the actual marathon on July 18.''
The 21st year of TMVM, the only marathon to be held in the monsoons in the world, will have various categories like three kms run for children under the age of 14 years; seven kms run for girls under 18, 10 kms for boys under 20 years and the main full marathon for men and half marathon for women. This year, a Maharashtra State Golden Jubilee Year Run of two kms will also be held, the organisers announced at the press conference.
