'Desperate' DS now targets Nizamabad bypoll

Nizamabad : With the Rajya Sabha seat doors more or less closed with the high command closing in on the names of the high-profile Jairam Ramesh, Renuka Chowdhury, J D Seelam and V Hanumantha Rao, a desperate Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president D Srinivas is spending sleepless nights these days. With no other option left, DS is banking on Nizamabad by polls from where he was upstaged by a little known BJP candidate Yendala Laxminarayana in 2009 elections. Though the notification for the by-elections is yet to be issued, the PCC chief is already touring the Nizamabad urban constituency extensively to wrest the seat from Laxminarayana, who quit the seat in support of separate Telangana state. DS is interacting with people of various divisions and holding meetings in each division. Since the by-elections are going to be held on Telangana plank, DS is trying to project himself as a strong Telangana votary. "It is a complete turnaround for DS since the time he has lost the 2009 elections. He is going all out to woo the electorate and win the seat. The desperation is palpable," a political analyst said. So much so, the state Congress boss is personally interacting with individual voters in the constituency and enquiring whether they are benefited with government welfare schemes. "During his interactions with the voters in 44, 45, 46 and other divisions on Tuesday, he was curious to know whether the programmes are being implemented," a Congress leader said. Surprisingly, he skirted the recent Mahbubabad firing incident and Jagan's Odarpu yatra. But he kept on talking about how he would convince the high command to grant separate Telangana state. He also boasted that AICC president Sonia Gandhi was very much in favour of the separate state. It may be recalled after his stunning defeat in the 2009 elections, DS had stayed away from the constituency for a long period. "The fact that he has already made rounds to his home town 3/4 times in May indicates his eagerness to win the by-election," party sources averred. Sources said apart from taking all sections of the party along with him, DS is concentrating on the elders of various caste organisations and trading community to win their votes. A senior district Congress leader said DS is taking the bypoll as a prestigious issue this time. He held a closed-door meeting with minister for medical education P Sudarshan Reddy and former Assembly speaker K R Suresh Reddy two days ago. Meanwhile, the BJP is also leaving no stone unturned to retain the seat. Party sources said a 30-member student team of Osmania University JAC would tour the segment on June 6 in support of Laxminarayana.
