Shimla: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India Navin B Chawla on Jun 13 inaugurated a photo exhibition on the occasion of series of yearlong events/programmes on the Election Commission of India's diamond Jubilee at the historic gaiety theatre here.
Evincing keen interest in the photo exhibition based on the theme ''Greater participation for a stronger democracy'', Mr Chawla said the photo display of various historical moments of general elections over the last 60 years provide glimpse of India's Electoral Process.
He said the state had tough terrain and the election process here was quite a challenging task due to adverse geographical conditions. The pictures pertaining to the state needed to be incorporated in the albums and video films of ECI, so that the country may see the hardships, people of this hilly state face while exercising their right to franchise, he added. The motive behind such exhibition was to create awareness among the masses and coming generations about the history of democratic set up.
The exhibition showcased glimpses of Himachal's post election process, the highest Polling Stations of Hikkam (15000 ft) in Lahaul and Spiti and the aged voters of the State. Talking to reporters, he said, '' at least one Booth level officer (BLO) is required for one polling booth. As of now, we have as many as 800 BLOs less than what is required''.
Mr Chawla said it was not possible for one BLO to look after two or three booths. He urged the Government to ensure one BLO for each booth and raise their remuneration as well. He said the process of finalisation and publication of electoral rolls in the state should be completed by September 15. The photo exhibition was jointly organised by ECI, Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) and Chief Electoral Officers of States and Union Territories.
