Gangtok : Tremors of very low intensity were recorded in and around Gangtok on May 26. The tremors with an intensity of 2.2 on Richter scale were recorded at 1025 hrs by the Tadong Observatory of the Met Office.
The epicentre of the tremors was located some where within a radius of 25 kms from Tadong. Director of Meteorological Centre, Gangtok, K. Sitaram said tremors of an intensity of less than 3.0 on Richter scale normally go unnoticed, though they get recorded on the Richter scale. ''Such low intensity tremors are a normal phenomenon for Sikkim as the capital city Gangtok on an average records 20 to 25 such tremors in a month,'' he added.
Mr Sitaram said such tremor was good for the hills as they prevented accumulation of tectonic pressure beneath the earth surface by releasing it from time to time. ''Though the earthquakes cannot be forecast in advance anywhere in the world, such frequent low intensity tremors do help in reducing the intensity of any possible major earthquake in future,'' he added.
