Kochi: Maintaining their supremacy, reigning champions Railways showed their prowess and agility to garner 26 medals including 9 gold at the end of the second day in the 50th National Open Athletics Championship.
Railways also bagged nine silvers and eight bronze. The day also proved lucky for Kerala, which won three gold medals and also saw its promising athlete Tintu Luka shattering the 12-year-old meet record in 800m, much to the delight of the holiday crowd.
Tintu, a student of former sprint queen PT Usha's athletic academy in Kozhikode district, deservedly won the one-sided final, clocking 2:01.61 secs, erasing the record of 2:01.74 secs set by international Jyotimoyee Sikdar of West Bengal in 1998.
Tintu, who had won the 'best female athlete' honour in the last edition at Bhopal, was off to a perfect start and did not face any challenge from her opponents before winning in style.
An elated Usha, who was watching Tintu's record breaking performance, said, "this is the start of the season and a record breaking performance would do a lot of good for Tintu. This would boost her confidence level to perform still better in the coming meets."
Railway's Sharda Narayan with a time of 11.56 secs and Andhra Pradesh's Md Abdul Najeeb Qureshi with 10.42 secs, who won the gold medal in the 100m race, were declared as the 'fastest women and men' athletes of the meet respectively.
A jubilant Sharda, who retained the title which she had won in the Bhopal edition, told PTI, "today was my day and I was confident to win the race."
In the men's 800 m, Prakash Verma of Railways clinched the gold with a time of 1:48.72 secs while Pankaj Dimri of police at 1:48.99 secs and Francis of Service at 1:49.52 settled for the second and third places respectively.
