Gangtok : Hamstrung by dissidence in the ranks of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front, the state government on Mar 29 introduced a legislation to bring under the net of the anti-defection law the members of Gram Panchayat and Zila Panchayat.
In the Sikkim Panchayat (Amendment) Bill, 2010, the state government has proposed amendments in section 29 and section 66 of the Sikkim Panchayat Bill, saying that a member of Gram Panchayat and Zila Panchayat respectively, being a member of any political party, will cease to the member of the rural bodies if he ceased to be the member of the political outfit.
