New Delhi : The Supreme Court on March 9 allowed construction of a new administrative block inside the precincts of the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata.
However, a bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said the construction can be carried out on the condition that the architecture of the monument is not affected. Victoria Memorial authorities had moved the apex court seeking to modify the Calcutta High Court order disallowing any new structure.
The authorities had submitted that a new administrative block was required to replace the crumbling structure. They had submitted that the plan was approved by the National Institute of Design and the Centre. The Calcutta High Court on September 28, 2007 had disallowed any new construction activity in the precincts of the Victoria Memorial.
