New Delhi : Women activists of the BJP and CPI (M) on Mar 9 staged demonstrations outside Parliament to protest the delay in the passage of Women's Reservation Bill, following which they were detained by police.
The first protest was by BJP Mahila Morcha in the morning when over 20 activists converged at the Parliament Gate near Vijay Chowk and blocked traffic. The demonstrators shouted slogans against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. Police immediately swung into action and detained them. They were taken to Parliament Street police station, a senior official said. Some MPs alleged that Parliamentarians were also blocked from entering the House along with the protesters.
Reacting to the demonstrations, RJD chief Lalu Prasad, one of the strongest opponents of the Bill, said, "See, they are even blocking MPs from entering Parliament.
