New Delhi : The Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) row over the reservation of faculty in the campus continues with the Executive Council (EC) members losing their temper due to the proceedings of the last EC meeting on January 12, accusing the administration of misrepresenting the unity on the reservation issue of the Academic Council (AC).
In a circular by the university administration, it clearly states that except at the entry point of assistant professor, the reservation in higher faculty is first to be discussed by all schools/ centres before the AC meets.
The JNU vice-chancellor B B Bhattacharya received a note from the EC member P. Sainath pointing out that more than one member questioned the purpose of referring the matter to the AC during the meeting of the EC. "It is contemptible to find the proceedings of EC's meeting and I dismiss its idea of cancelling its earlier resolutions," said Sainath.
Objecting to the circular, he said that, "The execution of the reservation policy of the government lies in the hands of the executive and administrative staff; it is in no way in the hands of the academic."
To discuss withholding of information from EC, Sainath demanded another EC meeting as he claimed that it was not told that a case has been up in Supreme Court for JNU by Citizens for Equality challenging University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines on reservation.
Sainath had opposed the issue even in his earlier letter to the VC where he mentioned that reserving seats in the higher faculty is atypically the mingling of class arrogance and caste hatred.
Aditya Mukherjee, professor in history, in the meanwhile circulated a letter on February 14, opposing the reservation in higher faculty like associate professor and professor.
