HC issues non-bailable warrant against Sajjan Kumar for 1984 riots

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court on Feb 17 issued a non-bailable warrant against Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The High Court adjourned by a day the hearing on Sajjan Kumar's plea seeking anticipatory bail. The Congress leader had challenged a trial court order rejecting his anticipatory bail application. He will now have to appear before a trial court and can be arrested any time, if required, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Hearing seven bail applications, Justice S.L. Bayana granted stay on the arrest of two of the accused - Brahmanand and Peru. The hearing on anticipatory bail plea of other five will take place on Feb 18. Apprehending arrest, the former union minister had approached the high court on Feb 16 against the trial court order but had been denied an early hearing.

The CBI had filed a chargesheet against Sajjan Kumar and others in two cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the national capital. Sajjan Kumar is among those accused of instigating mobs that killed over 3,000 Sikhs across Delhi in the days following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Oct 31, 1984.
