Facebook overcomes Yahoo

Social networking giant Facebook has finally managed to displace Yahoo, to become the second most popular website in the United States. Yahoo, which held the number one spot till 2008 was first overrun by Google and now after two years, by Facebook.

To put these in sheer numbers, Yahoo boasted of 132 million unique visitors users in January 2010 - just below Facebook's figure of 133 million. Google by far, leads the pack with a staggering 147.8 million unique visitor count! These latest results were revealed thanks to a Web analytics research by Compete.

Will Yahoo be able to claw back in? Or is Facebook unstoppable now? It would be interesting to see how close Facebook actually manages to get to Google. As of now, Google sits on a comfortable lead but then, in the world of Internet, things change quickly. That being said, Facebook has to counter the growing threat of Twitter, which as of now is a tiny blip on the radar with just 21.79 million unique visitors. But it is growing too fast for anyone's comfort!

While it may be second in terms of the number of unique visitors, Facebook trumps everyone in the "time spent" column! American users spend 11.6% of their online time on Facebook. This is way ahead of Yahoo's 4.25% or Google's 4.1%. This is however natural because of the social nature of Facebook that warrants a longer stay. Twitter seems to be the only entity that could challenge Facebook in this department soon.
